Chromium (III) Oxide

Chromium (III) Oxide is an inorganic compound with the formula Cr₂O₃. It is one of the principal oxides of chromium and is used as a pigment. It can be manufactured by heating chromium hydroxide, heating dry ammonium dichromate, and heating sodium dichromate with sulfur and washing out the sodium sulfate:

(NH₄)₂Cr₂O₇ --> Cr₂O₃ + N₂ + 4H₂O

Na₂Cr₂O₇ + S --> Na₂SO₄ + Cr₂O₃

This compound is employed in metallurgical processing and has applications in chrome plating and anodizing aluminum. It can also used in paints, inks, and glasses.
