Silicon is a chemical element with symbol Si, atomic number 14, and possesses a gray to black appearance. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust exceeded only by oxygen. The metalloid is rarely found in pure crystal form and is usually produced from the iron-silicon alloy ferrosilicon. Silicon can be used to create solar cells, transistors, rectifiers, and other devices. Besides these items silicon can also be used as a hardener/thickener agent, detergents, cosmetic products, etc.
